5 Reasons Why You Should Have an Altar

lakshmi ganesha

An altar is a spiritual and sacred gateway to connect with the gods and ancestors. It has been one of, if not the most, important practices I adopted on my spiritual path. There are countless benefits and reasons why I adamantly suggest having altars in your living space.  This article outlines some important reasons why having altars are beneficial.

If you do not have an altar or would like help on constructing one, I suggest our articles entitled “Altars for Ancestors: How to Setup and Give Offerings” & “How to Burn Ancestor Money on Your Altar

The following list includes benefits that I have personally seen in my life and others.  As always, the best judge is yourself.  Start working with altars and observe your reality.  Has your life changed for the better?  Do you feel more energized?  Are you at peace?  These are some questions you can answer to determine how effective working with altars helps to expand your consciousness and evolve spiritually.

This list applies to gods, goddesses, ancestors or any other beings or energies you want to align with.  The information laid out is general for altars in their entirety.  It is not specific to one form.

5 Reasons Why You Should Have an Altar

  1. Greater connections – An altar is a gateway to connect with different energies (ancestors, deities, angels etc.).  Once you set up an altar and practice offerings and prayers, you form a greater relationship with that which you are already connected to.  The practice of working with the altar amplifies the relationships to make them more personal as opposed to indirect and unintentional.
  2. Better quality of life – There are literally gods and goddesses for every situation and issue in life.  Our ancestors, for the most part, love us and want to help us in our lives.  An altar allows us to experience a greater life because we are connecting with the very energy that manipulates life.  Aligning yourself to gods that “specialize” in a particular area will increase the chance for you to be successful and happy in that which you participate in.
  3. Honoring the ancestors and deities – Since the altar is a gateway to connect with different energies, through prayers, burning ancestor money and offerings you are paying respects and honoring divine and familial beings. Ritual work can be looked at as giving your child or loved one a birthday party. A birthday party usually involves honoring and celebrating someone’s presence.  This is the way altars work when we work with them.
  4. Rising above human thought – Most humans are concerned primarily with that which is physical.  In general, most people think about money, people, and things.  An altar reminds us that there are spiritual aspects of ourselves in the form of gods and goddesses.  An altar reminds us that we are greater than what our society teaches us.  The more you connect with the higher beings, the more you will rise above human limitations.
  5. Being active on your spiritual path; a practice – An altar allows us to practice spirituality as opposed to reading and talking about spiritual, metaphysical, and occult things.  Having a practice, something that you actually do, will generate more things to talk about than you have tongue to speak.

In closing, remember, there are literally countless reasons why altar work can benefit you. Hopefully, the examples above will inspire you to put in work.  Have fun and invoke the energy of love, giving, and compassion.  Peace.

7 Tips to Make Your Ancestor Altar More Powerful

ancestor_altar_3

An ancestral altar is a portal to send energy (offerings) and communication (prayers) to the spirit world.  We all have a bloodline so we have ancestors in the ethers, heavens, or spirit world. These ancestors usually need our help. The altar allows us to assist our loved ones in a safe and productive manner. The intention of this article is to provide tips that will take your altar game to another level.

Putting up an ancestor altar is very easy. Be sure to check out our step-by-step article “Altars for Ancestors: How to Set up and Give Offerings” for easy-to-follow instructions if you do not have an altar set up.  Once you have an altar constructed these tips will help you power it up!

Tips to Make Your Ancestor Altar More Powerful

  1. Daily offerings; consistency – Getting in the habit of giving an offering daily is a ritual that pays off beautifully.  Imagine if you had a friend that gave you something everyday.  Would that friend be a good acquaintance?  This is what you become when you acknowledge your ancestors daily.  They know who is taking care of them so they, in turn, will take care of you.
  2. Offer meat as often as possible – Meat is condensed energy.  This energy can be used by the ancestors in their realm.  It doesn’t matter if you or your loved ones are/were vegetarians.  Remember, they are getting the energy of the offering not eating the physical food.  The energy of meat is strong enough to satisfy the needs of our ancestors.
  3. Burn ancestor money (Joss paper)Ancestor money is a concept that was introduced in the West to many people via Master Dr. Mitchell Gibson (tybro.com). According to Dr. Gibson, our ancestors still have needs in the spirit world.  They also leave debt that trickles down to their living bloodline. Burning ancestor money dissolves their debts, helps them get what they need and want, and provides extra energy for them to assist the living.  See: “How to Burn Ancestor Money on Your Altar
  4. Place altar in most respectful location in your home – Everyone’s living condition is different.  It’s critical that within your home that you find the most respectful place to set up your altar.  This will usually be a living or family room, hallway, spare room, or other dedicated spots.  A key is to maintain a positive vibe around the altar devoid of cursing, drinking, smoking and other secular activities.
  5. Light a candle before you give offerings and burn ancestor money – A candle acts as a doorbell at your altar.  It’s like letting the ancestors know that you are about to give them something.
  6. Show much gratitude – Gratitude is a big thing when dealing with people and our ancestors.  I suggest that we thank the ancestors for what we want and need as opposed to asking.  For example, “thank you for blessing me with more money” instead of asking for more money. Gratitude shows that you appreciate what they can do.  Asking usually comes from a place of lack and desperation.  It’s a mindset thing!
  7. Have mindset of giving instead of receiving – Many people want things and there is nothing right or wrong with that.  The first responsibility of an altar is to take care of the ancestors.  They will take care of you more as a result of your giving.  Do your best to not expect things.  I recommend just being open.  You expect a paycheck from your job after working 40+ hours.  Your ancestor altar is not a job; it’s a practice to take care of your loved ones.
These tips for working with the ancestral altar will step your game up to another level.  Ancestor altars are not a place of worship but more of a partnership between you and those who love you. A properly set up altar and practice will help you connect with the ancestors more than when they were “living” for most of us.  Have fun and enjoy your newly cultivated relationships.

How to Burn Ancestor Money on Your Altar (Joss Paper)

ancestor money

Many people in the West are becoming more aware and using ancestor money nowadays.  Dr. Mitchell Gibson (tybro.com) was the first person I heard speak about the importance of burning ancestor money on your ancestral altar.  This article will help you better serve your relatives on the “other side”.

Ancestor money has different names including ghost money, spirit money, Joss paper, hell notes (mistranslation), heaven notes etc.  Most of them will have the image of the Jade Emperor.  The Jade Emperor is a Higher God in the Taoist pantheon and is considered the deity over all money on earth.

As we pointed out in the article, Altars for Ancestors: How to Setup & Give Offerings, burning ancestor money at your altar is a beneficial practice for yourself and the ancestors.  When our loved ones transition, they still need things in the afterlife.  One of these things is ancestor money to help dissolve debt in this realm and beyond!

Burning ancestor money on your altar is a very easy practice that yields phenomenal benefits. You can burn one or more bills everyday, on set days, or whenever you can.  For me, it seems to yield the best results when done all the time, so do your best to burn daily.

How to Burn Ancestor Money

What you need:

What you do:
  • Give your daily offering of food and/or other items (cigars, wine, alcohol, perfume, loved ones favorite items etc.)
  • Write the names of your ancestors on the money.  You can list by full name or put the family name ie. Jones, Myers, Smith etc.
  • Say something like “this money is for all my ancestors both known and unknown”, while you burn it
  • Burn the ancstor money AT YOUR ALTAR in the safe pot
  • Give thanks
That is all you have to do!  Once again, this practice is very simple and tremendous benefits have come into my life since including this habit in ancestor offerings on a regular basis.

Altars for Ancestors: How to Setup & Give Offerings

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Having an altar for your ancestors is a very important practice.  Our ancestors, depending on their state of awareness on the “other side”, need help from us.  Many people transition from this world into the spirit realm with no conscious awareness of the afterlife.  Sometimes these souls get caught up in the lower worlds and within these worlds they (our ancestors) require a certain amount of energy.

This article will serve as a guide for setting up an ancestral altar.  Feel free to use this guide as a blueprint and add to or take away what you like.

Ancestral altars serve as a portal or gateway for communicating and transferring energy from you to your ancestors and vice versa.  After you setup and start to work with your ancestral altar you will have a beacon of light that attracts and satisfies your family members that have passed on.

When we help our ancestors they can assist us.  There are benefits of not being in the human body and our ancestors can pull strings for us in the spirit realm to help us out in our earthly lives.  Making offerings to your ancestors is a mutually benefiting practice that anyone can do with a little know-how and commitment.

It is very easy to setup an altar and you should have one up in no time!  Have fun creating your altar and always remember to follow your Spirit Mind and intuitive faculties.  If you feel that you should do something different than what I outline in this article, then go with that thought.  It’s probably your ancestors telling you!

Items You will Need

  • small or large table preferably made out of wood
  • pictures and/or items of deceased relatives
  • small glass or ceramic bowl for water (south)
  • candle(s) – fire (east)
  • incense and holder – air (north)
  • crystal(s), gemstones, rocks, and/or coins – earth (west)
  • anything else you want to put on your altar

How to Setup Your Altar

  • If you’re able to designate a room of its own for your altar then do that.  If not, place your altar wherever you feel comfortable having it. Try to avoid placing it in the bathroom, bedroom, garage, laundry room, if you can.
  • Place all the pictures and/or your loved ones items on the altar table.
  • Place your crystals and/or coin, candle(s), incense holder, bowl of water and any other items on your altar table.  You may place them according to their elemental direction (optional).

What to Offer

  • food of any kind especially meats.  Just make an extra plate at dinner time.  If your budget doesn’t allow an extra plate then you can offer rice or potatoes.  Offer food daily.
  • liquor and/or beer.  Especially if you know of ancestors with a fancy for alcohol.
  • cigars, cigarettes, and/or smokeless tobacco.  Especially if you know of ancestors who yearned for any of these items.
  • ancestor money aka hell notes, heaven notes or Joss paper.  This is optional but highly recommended.  Burning ancestor money is uncommon in the United States but heavily practiced in other cultures.  The bigger the denomination the better.  Offer daily, if possible.
  • flowers

How to make an offering

Make sure you make an offering everyday.  Get in a habit of making an offering before or after you eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Be sure to keep some kind of fruit on the altar as this serves as an energy source that can be left on the altar for a few days.  Usually the fruit you place on the altar will stay ripe longer!

You can refresh the bowl of water daily or every few days.

  • Light your candle and incense.
  • Place your offering on the altar.  It can be any one or more items listed above.
  • Verbally speak that this offering is for your ancestors that are known and unknown.  You may also say names or surnames.
  • If you have ancestor money, you can burn as much as you like in a steel or fireproof pot.
  • Verbally speak that the money is for your ancestors known and unknown.  You may also say names or surnames.
  • Now speak to your ancestors.  Talk to them collectively or by name.  It can be a simple thank you or an elaborate ritualistic prayer.  This is the time to ask for forgiveness for anything that you may have done to any one of your ancestors.  This is also the time to ask for help. Remember to be reasonable and practical.
  • Thank your ancestors and blow out the candle(s).
